ENDLESS ARCHIPELAGO

The ENDLESS ARCHIPELAGO series refers to the land and people of the Pacific and their echoes of connection across the world. The series connects the islands and people of the Blue Continent, Moananuiākea–the greater Pacific Ocean–from the 7,000+ islands of the Philippines in the Western Pacific to the Hawaiian archipelago. The series highlights shared materials, customs, plants, animals and migrations of the Pacific as a testament to the resilience and abundance of these places and their citizens.

Working in multimedia painting and installation, Melissa Chimera connects people, and their native plants and animals while acknowledging past and present socio-environmental-political and economic imbalances across the globe. She examines these relationships in her textile installation Chain Migration which features South Asian migrant fishermen, the artist as a child, her family members and their known paths derived from the public record. Her multimedia paintings Moananuiākea and Endless Archipelago, Filipina reference the latitudes and longitudes of Pacific Island nations, while the latter draws upon her own image and objects from the Southern Philippines as a nod to her Visayan Island ancestors. Her works gather people, their natural and cultural symbols which transcend political and economic boundaries.
